A String of Bad Luck

The books I've been reading lately have been pretty depressing. Somehow they all seem to have anxiety, friend problems and breaking up. I didn't plan this. I like to read happy things or stuff that makes me forget about reality. And I want to be prepared for whatever topic comes up beforehand. I don't like surprises. I knew with the E. Lockhart books that the main character had anxiety and lost all her friends. I didn't know that the Jennifer Echols book that I am reading now has a character with claustrophobia. I also wasn't prepared for it in The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight.

The other books that I have read also had a lot of divorces and separations and such. Most of these are problems that are beyond the Main Character's control, (which I mind less than a bad decision problem.) Sometimes, the divorces and separations influence the Main Character's bad decisions, which I totally understand. I can't imagine what it would be like to have something like that happen.

But really - Bittersweet, The Guardian, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, Love and Leftovers. I need a break! Not everyone is breaking up! I need a good fantasy book after all of this reality. Or something more lighthearted, with a character like Ramona Quimby. I hope I have one on my TBR stack soon. I think The Fault in Our Stars will have to wait.

Don't get me wrong, I have liked all of the books that I have read recently. I would never un-read them. I would just like something different. At this point, I could write a paper on this topic, so I will stop here.

Does anyone else like to escape when they read? Have you ever had a string of coincidences with books that depress you?
