Teen Movie Thursday - Pitch Perfect

Comedy/Music, 2012
PG-13, 112 Minutes

Starring: Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp

The Barden Bellas are a collegiate, all-girls a cappella singing group thriving on female pop songs and their perfect looks. After a disastrous failing at last year's finals, they are forced to regroup. Among the new recruits is freshman Beca, an independent, aspiring DJ with no interest in the college life. But after she meets Jesse, from the rival all-male a cappella group, Beca has a new outlook and takes it upon herself to help the Bellas find their new look and sound and get back into the competition. Written by napierslogs

The Good: The music, the acting, the pace
The Bad: The way they portrayed the Cynthia Rose, the name "Fat Amy," the girls didn't bond, they didn't mix up their act soon enough

So. What I wish someone had told me: THERE IS A LOT OF VOMIT in the opening scene, and you do NOT see it coming. I hate puke. Ew. It shows up again in a later scene, but you know that's coming. My theory is that this chick was bulimic at one point, so her puke reflex is... over sensitive.

Overall, this movie was ok.

I like music movies, and I like movies that have a lot of female roles in them, so I expected a lot from this movie. Unfortunately, the girls didn't have a strong relationship, and I didn't like the way that they interacted together. There was one queen bee, and it was her way or the highway. They didn't work together at all. They didn't bond as they got to know each other or anything. The worst part of it was that THE WRITERS THEMSELVES realized this, because late in the movie, the characters talk about it.

Also, the girls were... well, mean. The were not nice to the lesbian, and I didn't like the way they had her want to do mouth-to-mouth on the other girl. And seriously. Fat Amy? That's not funny.

On the bright side, I liked the relationships. Instead of the guy getting the girl, the girl got the guy.

Finally, I liked the nod to The Breakfast Club. It was awesome how they put the song into the final act.

Ooo and Anna Kendrick is SUCH a good actress. I like her. And her love interest was such a cute, good guy. Way better than the jerk that led the Treble Makers. She does this in the movie:

And the way it ended? I smell a sequel.
