Reviewers' Roundtable: Blogging Slump

And Emily at Read Your Bookcase

What do you do when you hit a blogging slump?

Well, what do you know! The perfect topic! I just happen to currently be in a blogging slump.

How it began: I switched branches at work.
It turns out helping out at a brand-new branch involves a lot of decisions. A lot. And most of them are small, but everyone has a different opinion, and we're all super nice (hello - we're librarians from the midwest) so no one wanted to hurt anyone's feelings. The first few weren't so bad, but after the 20th... you get REALLY TIRED. Throw in a lot of heavy books, carts, and shelves and by the time you get home you basically go right to sleep. Well, I did anyway. Then after we opened and the initial rush settled, I had two really big projects in a row.

Therefore, the last thing I felt like doing after getting home was blog. I just wanted to read or watch TV. Or sleep. Basically, relax. Not work on something that feels like a part-time job sometimes.

So what did I do?

I stopped worrying about Top Ten Tuesday and Waiting on Wednesday.
These two days take a surprising amount of research, time and work. Even though it's the best way to find new blogging friends, I told myself not to worry about it.

I focused on enjoying reading.
I read whichever books I want to. I keep them in my "Currently Reading" section on Goodreads. When I had 15 minutes or so, I'd pick a book and promise myself to just TRY to write a little something. It didn't have to be the best blog post ever. What do you know - once I got started, the blog post just happened. It always was so much easier than what I thought it would be.

Even if I felt like I didn't have anything to say about a book, I knew in the future that I might want to look back on what I thought about it for myself. So I always tried.

Where am I at now?
I am thinking about starting either TTT or WoW again, but I will probably wait a bit. I want it to be something FUN, not something I HAVE to do. I don't have a backlog of books to review, I am proud to say. One step at a time!

What do you guys do about blogging slumps? Leave a comment!

Or better yet, write a blog post (haha) and link up at Pink Polka Dot Book Blog!

  1. I didn't realize you had so much going on at work!! Thanks for still doing this discussion thingy with me through your slump and through all your work stress :) When I go back to work I'm sure I'll go into a major slump. Right now I just finished up my degree (and my son just started Kindergarten) so I'm in an inbetween phase.

    1. Yeah! I like doing these posts. It's fun. Congratulations on finishing your degree!
