First Second, 2012
Audience: All Teens
After years of homeschooling, Maggie is starting high school. It's pretty terrifying.
Maggie's big brothers are there to watch her back, but ever since Mom left it just hasn't been the same.
Besides her brothers, Maggie's never had any real friends before. Lucy and Alistair don't have lots of friends either. But they eat lunch with her at school and bring her along on their small-town adventures.
Missing mothers...distant brothers...high school...new friends... It's a lot to deal with. But there's just one more thing.
MAGGIE IS HAUNTED.
Honestly, I hadn’t planned on reading this one because of the cover. Lame, I know. But I heard that she would be working with Rainbow Rowell in the future, and that Rowell liked this one the most. I enjoyed Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong, but I think I agree with Rainbow Rowell.
I really liked Anya’s Ghost, and I think that this is a good read alike. There are a lot of books out there about mom leaving, but I don’t think I’ve read any about someone who was home-schooled adjusting to going to school with others. What really added to this book was the fantasy of the ghost haunting the main character. It gave the reader a break from the reality of Maggie’s life.
I am glad she’s teaming up with Rainbow Rowell. I can’t wait to read their work. It’s going to be awesome!
